Artist Statement
I create wearable adornment from metal. My work is primarily about emotional struggle and finding ways to communicate those feelings to others. My work creates intimate moments through covered brooch backs and concealed curiosities, that can often be revealed through closeness and interaction. I enjoy mechanisms and hidden things that must be discovered. The piece When Faced with Finance is worn on the body and has hands that open, rendering an outsider’s interaction with it quite intimate. There is also a message on the back of the brooch which, when worn, is concealed to all but the wearer, who has the autonomy to share it or not. My work also references song and language by using text- specifically lyrics- to bring us together and encourage communication. The piece Patience is covered with a lyric one word at a time. The onlooker must move into the personal space of the wearer to read the words and the wearer is forced to stare at different, more cynical, words than the onlooker.
All three pieces in the series stemmed from three very specific memories. The song lyrics help the pieces to be easily digestible and yet are entirely ambiguous if approached with different memories and experiences. I am interested in the multiple interpretations certain works can produce.
